Fundraising Information
We would be delighted if you would consider us as a beneficiary
for your fundraising activities. If you are interested in fundraising
for the network, It is a requirement that all fundraising activities
or events run by an external party be approved and registered with
FLN. As a result we want to ensure you are aware of your role and
responsibilities as a fundraiser and how FLN can offer assistance
with your event. Please click on the Fundraising
Registration Form to help you get started with your fundraising!
Please ensure you fill in all sections with as much detail as possible.
Once FLN receives the registration form we will send an official
Authorisation to Fundraise (sanction) letter and fundraisers kits
that outlines conditions.
While FLN greatly appreciates the support of those that support
FLN, it is important that fundraising events are consistent with
the image and values of the Fitzroy Learning Network. We can provide
you with all the necessary information about who we are, what we
do etc . If you intend to produce material and utilise Fitzroy Learning
Network logo, then all marketing material will need to be approved
by the Marketing and Fundraising committee.
What is the Fitzroy Learning Network, and why does it need
money?
The FLN obtains some support from the government and philanthropic
trusts – but these sources are uncertain, and every year service
requirements grow. That’s where public donations come in…
the FLN can’t do it without you.
What fundraising event could I organise?
It’s up to you! It will depend on the things you are interested
in. It could be something like:
• a dinner party at home or in a restaurant
• an office party
• a street party, picnic or barbecue
• a games night, video night or quiz
• a stall at a trash and treasure market; maybe your friends
could contribute goods
• an event organised through your workplace giving program
What you plan will depend on whether you just want to have fun,
or whether you also want to raise awareness about the FLN. If you
want to give your event a refugee theme, for example, you could
hold an Afghan banquet, order Vietnamese takeaway, or organise a
coffee ceremony or an evening out to listen to Sudanese musicians–use
this as a focus for the evening, allowing your guests to talk about
the issues involved.
If it seems appropriate, you could read out the paragraph about
the FLN and why it needs money, and don’t forget to direct
people to the FLN website
You can obtain an information pack from the FLN to further help
you with planning your event.
How can I raise money from an event?
It’s up to you and what you’re comfortable with. Remember
though, that you should ask for donations: don’t charge money
for food or drink that you provide, unless you have a licence to
do so!
You could ask guests to make a straightforward donation of a set
number of dollars per person. Alternatively, you could ask them
for a private donation.
Guests could pay for food that you purchase (eg a takeaway or in
a restaurant) and agree that they’ll all pay a few extra dollars
as a donation.
Or you could make the event free, but sell tickets for an auction
or other entertainment.
Donations over $2 are tax deductible.
Use the donation form in the main FLN brochure to request tax deductible
receipts for your guests, or even better, direct people to the FLN
web site for online donations.
What practical things should I think about?
Firstly it is important that you complete a registration form and
have gained written approval for your event from the Network.
• Decide on the type of event you will hold
• Inform your guests in advance that this will be a fundraising
event. Tell them how much they will be asked to donate, if you’re
going to specify this. Make sure they know to bring cash or cheques.
• If you’re holding an outdoor event, have a back-up
plan in case of bad weather. Find out from your local council whether
you’ll need any permits for it.
• Warn neighbours if you’re likely to disturb them (and
while you’re at it, why not invite them along?)
• Have a back-up plan if too many people turn up.
• Think about the contacts you have – in your social
group or at work for example – who could help. Do your friends
have public speaking or cookery talents? Could your employer donate
things for an auction, or allow you to use a work venue? Are there
any local businesses that might donate prizes or other goods?
• Think about what’s culturally appropriate for the
group you’re inviting, particularly if you’re holding
an event where you don’t know everyone well. You might, for
instance, consider dietary and non-alcoholic options.
What next?
Congratulations! You’ve held your event, and raised much needed
funds.
The Fitzroy Learning Network will be very grateful for your contribution.
