ASRC NEEDS MOBILE PHONES
Do you have a phone for an asylum seeker in need?
As part of our aid work, the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre ensures that all asylum seekers accessing our centre have access to a working mobile phone. However, the ASRC receives no federal government funding for its aid services and relies heavily on public donations. We are seeking your help to source mobile phones which are urgently needed by asylum seekers.
Mobile phones are so important to this highly marginalised community. This is because arriving in a new country can be extremely difficult. Having a mobile phone helps asylum seekers stay connected with their new communities and the ASRC. It is not merely a phone, but a tool to reduce social isolation, foster and maintain community connections and a sense of belonging.
Have you got a phone to give? Fantastic! – here is what we need:
We cannot distribute broken or incomplete mobile phone packages to asylum seekers. As such, it is important that all donations:
- Include a mobile phone, a battery and a chargers
- Are intact and are not missing any parts
- Have no exposed wiring or electrical parts
- Are still fully functioning and have batteries that charge properly
- Please place all components in the box or a plastic bag (with a zip lock if possible).
It is a good idea to charge up a phone that you are planning to donate. After charging the phone, if the batteries deplete within 6 hours the phone would be more suitable for recycling at your local mobile phone store.
Phones can be posted or brought in person to the ASRC office at 12 Batman St West Melbourne.
Please feel free to contact Jodie on 9326 6066 for further information.
